2/27/2017 1 Comment À propos de NiceI only has a few things to talk about for this film. First is how i find it. So i searched Jean Vigo on Youtube, and many of short films popped out, and then i saw a film that it's title picture is a naked woman who is sitting on a chair, and then i clicked that movie without hesitation, i just feel like i have to be honest with you about this. Secondly, about the film itself, i don't know what really is going on, it kinda just shows the life of people in Nice; and then i saw the naked woman part, i'm guessing the director tried tell us that French people is very open-minded? What's more, the use of music is also really interesting, and i know Jean Vigo is a director who knows the use of music, so i think he did a good job on this one, since this is his very first movie.

2/27/2017 1 Comment Citizen KaneThis is the first old American movie that i saw that feels like it's being made in modern times. It's almost like watching The wolf of wall street in a black and white version. I think the reason why this movie looks so good is that it used many interesting shots and cuts which made it looks so "professional"(i can't think of any other words to explain this feeling). The viewing experience is awesome, and i do like the twist in the end.
Talking about plot, the movie talks about how Charles Foster Kane became one of the most successful people in the world who almost owns everything, but then, fall immediately and lost almost everything. What makes this movie more interesting is it starts with the death of Charles Kane, and then tell the story with the view of a reporter. Before the movie, i thought citizen kane means a hero called kane, and it's about his glory story, but sadly charles kane is just a man with too much ambitious, and he kinda dig his own grave through the story. I feel no sympathy for this character at all, he had it coming. The biggest part about this movie is the use of some technology stuff. In this movie, the use of deep focus is amazing, although i'm not 100% sure what this really is, but i know it's a filming technique that relates to the background and the action. I remember this movie has many shots of big structure but with people doing some movements in it. And also when i search how they make some of the scenes, i found a picture of Orson Welles is holding camera with half of his body underground; i think he was trying to film some really low-angle shots. Loves it. 2/23/2017 0 Comments A monster's callAfter watching Manchester by the sea, i wondered if my life can get any more depressed, so i watched this movie, and my life did get more depressed. Since i watched this movie right after i watched Manchester by the sea, so i compared both movies a little bit. Unlike MBTS, this movie has more emotional outburst, and those moments are presented by some amazing CGI and animations. This is a very good looking movie, and i think if you love fantasy story, you will enjoy it.
The story is about a boy, who has a sick mom and was being bullied a lot in school. He always has a nightmare about he can't save his mom from an earthquake, and also he has a version about a tree-looking monster. Again, not gonna spoiler here, since the plot matters to the whole viewing experience. I think this movie is kinda similar to Pan's Labyrinth, they are both dark fantasy(sort of), and they both have some visually stunning elements. But this movie is more straight forward, it tells you what's gonna happen in this movie, including the choices of different characters , but it didn't tell how it's gonna effect the those characters. When you watched this movie, put more focus on the boy's life, that's how i understand this movie, and i believe the director wants us to think that way too. I can not say how awesome this movie is without talking about those visual elements. I saw a video about how they make the monster, it's pretty much like how they make Hulk in the avenger: they build part of the monster then add CGI later, and those CGI are really well made. Also, the animation in this movie is beyond beautiful, but it's kinda dark though, so be alarmed. I think the best part of this movie is Liam Neeson's monster voice, and himself appeared in the movie somewhere too(see if you can find it). 2/23/2017 0 Comments Manchester by the seaI've never felt so depressed in my life so far after watching this movie, while i'm glad that i didn't miss such a good movie that did a good job on story telling, acting, and shots. This is those kind movies that makes you pay attention to what is going on all the time, and it's a neat experience to watch this.
For the story itself(no spoiler, since the spoiler will give the feeling away about this movie), it's about a young man who has experienced some life problems, and started to feel nothing about his life. But one day he got a phone call from a hospital in Manchester and learned that his brother is dying, and the story goes from there. I think the story of this movie is one of the most important reasons why this movie is so good, and so sad at the same time, so i wish everyone should watch it. But at the same time, if you're expecting a movie with super big plot twist or a super "epic" story, i won't recommend this movie to you, since everything in this movie seems so peaceful, so is the plot. The sadness is everywhere, not just in one part. The story telling in this movie is mostly forward, with some flashbacks. Like i mentioned before, the director successfully created a depressing mood in the beginning, and it keeps going through out the entire film. You can feel this mood from the filter(i believe the director used some kind of filter) the music, and also, the awesome acting from Casey Affleck. To be honest, during the entire movie, i think Casey Affleck almost has only one expression, which is a face with no expression, but when he comes to an emotional outbreak, his acting becomes so powerful that will breaks your heart for sure. There is several time that i just want to paused the movie and clam down a little bit. Well, before this movie, i wish Ryan Gosling can get the Oscar, but now i've changed my mind. This movie just keep throwing it's emotion at you, i feel so sorry of Casey right now even though i don't have kids. Spoiler alert!!!!!!!!!
When i saw the trailer for this movie for the first time, i decided i'm going to see it in the movie theatre when it came out. And i still remember when i stood in front of the two posters of "Arrival" and "Doctor Strange" outside the Florence movie theatre, i knew "Arrival" can wait for it's best time. So i got this movie last week, and watched it on Saturday; as i expected, this movie is confusing and needs to be watched with patience and observation. I watched it 1 am in the morning, so i'm like half brain dead, which made me still kinda confused about some of the plot, but overall, i did enjoy my time of watching this movie. This is a non-traditional science fiction movie from my opinion, it told a story which 12 space ship appeared on different parts of the earth, and people already know they're from outer space since they considered those squid-looking creature inside the spaceships are aliens. But the problem is human don't know the true intension of those creatures, and they lacked of ways to communicate with them, so the military force has to ask a female linguist called louise for help, and the story goes from there. The movie starts with the death of louise's daughter, who dies in cancer, and during the movie, there is several flashback about it too. It seems like Louise was struggled with her daughter's death during the whole story. However (spoiler alert again!!!!!), it turns out those flashback are actually a future version which was given by those aliens in the spaceship; Lousie learned that she is going to have a daughter and her daughter will die no matter what after she got closer with the aliens. That's biggest twist in the movie, and the story ends with Louise decided to accept her fate. My biggest confusion, or it maybe a sense of dissatisfy is that i think that twist seems too small for such a big story, i was actually expecting something different, like the whole story is an infinite loop or something like that. I feel like the director put the daughter scene in the very front is only meant to confuse the audience, not to make the story feel like a whole. After you know the twist, the whole story became a straight story, which is just when a woman got some superpower from the alien, she began to use that power too see her future daughter, and that's it. When i think that way, i would feel the daughter part in the beginning was kinda unnecessary, since it didn't affect the story at all, and i think something smart should happened to that scene. Those are just my understanding about this movie, i still love the way how the director told the story, it really makes you want to know what's going on next, even though what's about to happen is a little bit stupid. I would be happy to watch this movie again when i totally forgot the plot of this movie. 1/30/2017 1 Comment Resident evil - the last chapterDon't ask me why i haven't seen spilt this week, it's because of this movie franchise, which represents part of my childhood, and it's my duty to watch how it ends. Now, i know many resident evil game fans or haters like my teacher would say the RE movie franchise is completely trash; i would say the movies are just following the routine of the game franchise, since 4th RE game turned into an action game like the movies did.
According to Rotten tomatoes, this RE movie got the highest score among all the franchise. After i watched this movie, i think this movie worth the score and the money, TO be continued..... 1/23/2017 1 Comment xXx: return of Xander CageI had two choices this weekend, one is this, one is spilt, and the reason why chose this one is i want to save the best to the last(the best means spilt). Well, back to the topic, this is Vin Diesel action movie, which means you can guess the whole plot from the trailer. The first xXx movie came out in 2002, it's one of the best memories in my childhood, I'm amazed by all those crazy action and extreme sports elements in the movie. The second xXx movie is starring by Ice Cube, i personally love it even though people said it's bad. So before i see the third xXx movie, i went to rotten tomatoes, to see what this evil website tried to say about my favourite childhood memory and about this new one; the first one got a 48, the second one got 16..., and the new one got a.........89! I was thrilled, but then i realize this might be a dream, so i checked it again next day, and as i expected, it dropped to a 61. End of this story!
Back again to this movie itself, in the beginning of this movie, i saw it was funded by two big Chinese movie company, and i know there is going to be many Asian elements in it, but it turns out to be fine to watch. This movie borrow many ideas from other media production like video game: Saint row 3, and movie: fast and furious, and gave those idea a much more crazier appearance, i like it a lot. Because i grow up in China, i know this movie would become super popular in both China and Thailand, since it got the Holley wood crew and many cool-looking Asian actors. It got some surprise moments which only a xXx fan can get, and it got some funny moments which everyone would love to watch, so i think this movie is above average, and i recommeded it to Neha, if you're viewing this post>-< This is a suspense movie base on the true story of the life of Snowden, and how he manage to tell the whole world about the secret plan of the CIA. I watched this movie because of the trailer looks awesome, and it's starring by Joseph Gordon, and a 61 on rotton tomatoes looks fine to me.
The movie started with an interview in Hongkong, which is set after Snowdon successfully stole the key information from CIA. I'm not surprise to see that Joseph Gordon changed his accent again in this movie, since he did that in Dark Knight rise and some other movies. The plot pushed forward slowly but has some climax point, like the scene he cracked a CIA program in 40 minutes, which took normal people 6 hours to do the same thing; and of course the escape from a CIA camp, it was clever and intense. I'm surprised that the real Snowden is in this movie too, his appearance in the end add a dramatic taste to the ending. I liked this movie a lot because of the concept of a really smart person found himself in a trap and want to get out, to see such a character struggle is a lot of fun. The director putted many pieces together to show us a real Snowden, i can feel his pain from his many emotional outbreaks. Other than that, i think this movie would've been better if the director choose to tell a whole story, not piece by piece, but that won't affect this movie to be one of the best biographies. 1/4/2017 1 Comment Café SocietyIf you're tired of hardcore action, explosition or horror, then this movie would be your choice to relax yourself in an automosphere with nice costumes and jazz music. First, to all the people that knows me as a horror and action movie fan, i want to say i do watch drama movies like this, so surprise, surprise, surprise! This film is directed by Woody Allen, and the time period is set in the 90s. The plot is about a young man called Bobby(acted by jesse eisenberg) trying to find a job in New York, but found himself trapped into the so-called cafe society. To be honest, one important reason why i chose to see this movie is to see the chemistry between jesse and kristen, they always made a good couple in many other movies like adventureland, and they are full of charm. This is the one of few Woody Allen movies i watch, so i feel everything is really awesome, not like the ratings on many websites, which is kinda low. I disagree with those who says that this movie is boring, the plot itself fits the title pretty well, since it's cafe society, once you're part of it, you should feel your life is missing something. I enjoyed this movie a lot, and that's gonna be my start to watch more Woody Allen movies
My rate for this film: 9.5/10 Good 1. Chemistry between actors 2. Good soundtracks 3. Nice costumes Bad 1. Too short 1/4/2017 0 Comments The Autopsy of Jane DoeThis is a horror movie with a concept that everyone knows, but hidden behind it's fancy apperence. The story happens with a murder in a family, everyone in the family was murdered in cold blood. However, what makes this murder more suspenseful is the police found a female naked body buried under the ground, and there is no ID or any certification for this unknown woman. The police then hand this corpse to a local autopsy organzation, the autopsy organzation only has two member, a father and his son. They have no idea what's coming for them. The director of this movie try to create someting new, which in detail is to use science to explain something that can not be explained in something. The first part is so scary, the mood is right in the spot, and there is tons of professional information about autospy for those who is interested in biology. The second part of this movie returns to an old traditional way of telling a scary story, it contains a huge amounts of jump scares. The ending could be better, but it won't chanege the fact that this is a well-made horror movie.
My rate for this movie: 8.7/10 Good 1. The plot 2. Detail of the autospy 3. Suspensful in a reasonable way, which is kinda rare in nowadays. Bad 1. the ending 2. too much jump scare( maybe it's just i don't like it) |
